The Diptych

The Diptych

A diptych is an artwork composed of two panels, traditionally hinged together like a book. The tradition was used extensively in early religious art, whereby the hinged panels allowed for easy transport. Personally, I just love creating a flow of imagery moving from one canvas to the next.

About 10% of my work is multi panelled. There is something very liberating about allowing a composition to continue moving beyond the initial canvas. In fact, I would love to do multi panel commissions of 5, 6, 7 panels or more.

I think my favourite multi panel work is Luminous Sands, consisting or 3 large panels focused on an abstract expression of the desert landscape in Qatar. The multiple panels gave me the freedom to explore different aspects of the desert and the forces that link them together.

Oceans, estuaries and rivers are another subject of mine that work beautifully in the multi panel format. Water is never still; it flows across the canvas like the currents it is depicting, swirling into turbulence at times and softening at others.

My latest diptych artwork is Taupo inspired by the Lake in the north Island of New Zealand.
