
Travel is a big part of my artistic process. I find different cultures and landscapes to be very inspiring, and I always find it fascinating to watch how my painting develops after spending time away.
I recently spent an extended weekend in the Glass House Mountains, and it was an extraordinary experience. The weather was gloomy and the location was isolated and still. It was just my husband and I, the black cockatoos and the ancient, jagged peaks of Mount Coonowrin.
The atmosphere around these primordial volcanos is timeless. They have a presence about them, an ancient aura that seems to demand attention and respect. This moody feeling is accentuated when the early morning mist drops low and surrounds the rock formations in a timeless embrace.
When I got back to the studio, I was inspired to re-work the painting (Wild Country 6) waiting on my easel. This wasn’t a conscious process but in hindsight, it felt like I was stripping the painting back in time, to reflect on the ancient structures I had experienced.
